If you are interested in what it was like for children in the Second World War, here are some novels I would recommend for you:-
Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian
The story is about a young boy, William Beech, who is evacuated to the village of Little Wierwold. The book has been in publication for 30 years and is considered a classic children's story. From the blurb:-
"When the Second World War breaks out, young Willie Beech is evacuated to the countryside.
A sad, deprived child, he slowly begins to flourish under the card of kind old Tom Oakly. But then his cruel mother summons him back to war-torn London...
Will he ever see Mister Tom again?"

Carrie's War by Nina Bawden
This is another children's classic. Here is the blurb from the back of the book:-
"Bombs were falling on London. Carrie and Nick were wartime evacuees billted in Wales on old Mr. Evans, who was a bit of an ogre, and his timid mouse of a sister. Their freind Albert was luckier, living in Druid's Botton with Hepzibah Green and the strange Mister Johnny. Carrie and Nick were happy to visit him there, until Carrie did a terrible thing, the workst thing she ever did in her life..."

War Boy by Michael Foreman
From the blurb:-
"A special new edition of Michael Foreman's award-winning memoirs about his wartime childhood. 'I woke up when the bomb came through the roof. It came through at an angle, overflew my bed by inches, bounced up over my mother's bed, hit the mirror, dropped into the grate and exploded up the chimney.' The Second World War is an exciting time for a young boy growing up in a small town in Suffolk - sometimes far too exciting! Life during wartime is vividly brought to life in this personal story filled with childhood memories - from hiding in air-raid shelters to playing in the bombed-out ruins and the arrival of American soldiers. War Boy is a modern classic that combines a touching personal story with factual information and wonderful illustrations."
