Host Nation stories
In Host Nation we sometimes read stories written by British authors. Some of the stories are well known around the world while others are known only here in the U.K. Miss G tries to pick out some of the best stories and authors so that we can extend our reading experiences. Here you will find some of our favourite authors and stories.
'Elmer' by David McKee
Elmer is an unusual elephant. He is patchwork. We have read two Elmer stories about him in Host Nation. They are 'Elmer' and 'Elmer Again'. There are lots of other stories about Elmer the elephant but Miss G says that we can read them at home.
David McKee has written lots of other stories for children, too. Can you find some of them in the library, online or in bookshops?
Let Miss G know if you have read any other books by this author.

Anthony Browne
We have been talking about families in Host Nation and have read 'My Dad' and 'My Mum'. Anthony Browne has written lots of other books, too, such as 'Gorilla' and 'Willy the Wimp'. You can find out more about Anthony Browne and his books by clicking on this link:-

Nick Butterworth
As part of our families theme, we have also read some books by Nick Butterworth. He has written many more books and is probably best known for his 'Percy the Park Keeper' series, which was shown on childrens' television.

'Remembering' by Virginia Mayo
Virginia Mayo is a local author/illustrator. She wrote the book 'Remembering' to explain to her own children, Robert and Lizzie, why their grandfather would get so upset on Remembrance Sunday. Robert, Lizzie, their grandparents and great uncle Albert (who died in WW2) feature in the story.
Miss Grantham taught Robert and Lizzie when she was a teacher at Upwell Community Primary School, and her copy of the book is signed by the author.
Other books by Virginia Mayo include 'The Swan' and 'Don't Forget Me Father Christmas'
