The first topic that we cover in Second Grade is the Anglo-Saxons (also referred to as the Saxons).
We will learn all sorts of exciting things such as who the Anglo-Saxons were, where they came from and how they lived their lives.

Local days out to enhance your learning about the Anglo-Saxons
The Anglo-Saxon helmet found at Sutton Hoo
As part of the topic we will learn about the Anglo-Saxon settlement at West Stow as well as the famous ship burial at Sutton Hoo. You might like to visit these places with your family and, if you do, submit a report on the Student Recommendations page of this website.

The photograph above shows the helmet as it appears now, but we looked at a replica of how archaeologists think that the helmet would have looked when it was brand new. There are lots of interesting details on it. We noticed snakes, soldiers and lots of intricate patterns, too. The Anglo-Saxons were skilled metal workers and this helmet would have belonged to someone very important. Historians believe that it might have belonged to King Raedwald who was the King of East Anglia.
The Sutton Hoo Helmet by William E.
Second Graders drew pictures of the Sutton Hoo helmet. This one was drawn by William. There were lots of other really good drawings too!
We will be adding information about what we learn about the Anglo-Saxons on this page. So please come back to see how we are getting on.
We will also find out what life was like for Anglo-Saxon monks and the writer of the first history of the English people, Bede. If you venture northward then you might like to visit Bede's World. You might even like to combine this with a trip to visit Lindisfarne (also known as Holy Island).
Anglo-Saxon Runes
In Host Nation class we learnt about Anglo-Saxon runes. We enjoyed writing our own messages. You can download your own 'runesheet' from the BBC website, here http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory/worksheets/anglo-saxons/anglo_saxon_runes.pdf
