Feltwell is mentioned in the Domesday Book (a record of villages, towns and cities which was written in 1088). In those days the village was called "Fatwella" and the name means 'the settlement in a meadow by a stream'.
This is the Feltwell village sign and the pictures tell us about the history of Feltwell.
There is a big oak tree in the picture, a round towered church and a lady walking some dogs. There are also two shields which are the coats of arms of some local families.

The Feltwell Oak
Here is a picture of the Feltwell Oak which used to be on the corner of Oak Street and Bell Street. Some people believe that the tree was there when the Domesday Book was written. The tree was cut down on 23rd April 1964 and had a girth of 32ft.6ins. Some people also believe that it was a special meeting place where important decisions were made. The building behind the oak tree used to be an inn, but it has now been converted into houses.
Alveva
Alveva is the lady who appears on the village sign. She was a powerful woman who owned land in and around Feltwell before the Norman invasion of 1066. Her husband was Earl of Mercia and her two sons were also Earls. This meant that they assisted King Edward the Confessor in running England. Her daughter, Aldgyta, married Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex. This Harold is the same man who became King after the death of King Edward the Confessor and who was killed at the Battle of Hastings. That makes Alveva King Harold's mother-in-law!
After the Norman invasion, the new King, William I, gave most of Alveva's land to a man named William de Warrene. He was given lots of land all over England.
