What is geocaching?
Geocaching is an orienteering/treasure hunting game played using GPS devices. You have to navigate to a set of co-ordinates to try to find the geocache hidden there.
A geocache or 'cache' can vary in size and shape from a lare plastic container containing a log book and some swaps right down to a tiny micro cache with just enough room for a small log such as a rolled up strip of paper.
When you find a cache with swaps inside you may take something from it providing that you leave something of similar or greater value.
The great thing about Geocaching is that there are caches everywhere. Wherever you go there is likely to be one near you. Some are placed beside wonderful walking trails or near a site of interest, so geocaching can be a great way of getting some exercise by having a lovely walk and gives the children something to look for!
Search for caches near you by going to www.geocaching.com. You will need to register to retrieve the co-ordinates, but this is free so what's stopping you?
