Crossing the road
Copyright: direct.gov.uk
When you walk to school, to your friend's house or anywhere at all, you must follow six simple steps before crossing the road.
These handy rules are called the Green Cross Code:
1. First find a safer place to cross, then stop.
2. Stand on the pavement, near the kerb.
3. Look and listen for traffic and think about
what you're doing.
4. Wait until its safe to cross. If you are unsure,
don't cross.
5. Keep looking and listening as you cross the road.
6. Walk straight across the road - don't run.

Types of crossing places
Zebra Crossing
If there is a pedestrian crossing nearby then it is safer to use it.
The type of crossing in this picture is called a Zebra Crossing. Can you work out why?
When you cross the road here, you should follow the Green Cross Code. Car drivers should stop if they see that you are waiting to cross and then they must wait for you to do so. Don't just walk out in front of the car without being sure that the driver has seen you and is going to stop.

Pelican Crossing
Pelican Crossing
A pelican crossing is usually attached to some traffic lights. The traffic lights tell the driver of a vehicle what to do, and the person symbol shows pedestrians (people who are walking) what to do.
If you want to cross at the pelican crossing, you should press the button at the side of the kerb and wait. If the 'red man' is lit up you must continue waiting until the green walking man lights up. Then you should look both ways to check that all the cars have stopped before crossing the road. When the 'green man' is flashing, this means that you must not start to cross the road. If you are already crossing when the green person light flashes you should continue to cross quickly. The flashing person shows you that the lights are going to change colour soon.
